Where ignorance once silenced cries, education now saves lives.
In the rural villages of Kilifi, children are still being born with life-threatening conditions—many of them preventable or treatable. One such condition is imperforate anus, a congenital disorder where the anal opening is missing or blocked. Without urgent surgical intervention, survival is impossible.
But for generations, conditions like this weren’t understood. They were feared. Families hid their children, attributing deformities to curses or bad omens. Many never reached a clinic. Most didn’t survive.
That is, until education began to turn the tide.
Through Asante Aid’s Medicare Program—rooted in over two decades of health awareness and community empowerment—more than 60 children have been rescued from the shadows of silence. Children like Baraka, Carlos, Sharlet, Elizabeth, and Rose have received life-saving surgeries at regional hospitals like Kijabe, with transport, housing, and medical sponsorship provided by Asante Aid.
“They used to hide these children,” says a community elder in Mnarani. “Now they carry them to the clinic with pride.”
This shift didn’t happen overnight. It grew from years of local education:
Village forums on maternal health
Girls’ clubs learning about prenatal safety
Posters in clinics showing early warning signs
Former beneficiaries returning as nurses, midwives, and role models
Our Education for All campaign didn’t just open classroom doors—it opened minds. Today, clinic attendance in target areas has increased dramatically. Dangerous taboos are breaking. And children with disabilities are no longer shamed, but celebrated.
We aren’t just treating children—we’re restoring dignity, building trust, and transforming generations.
